The road from Trashigang to Samdrup Jongkhar was completed in the early 1960s and enables the eastern part of the Kingdom to access and benifit from trade with the south as well as to cross the border into India. It is possible to drive from Samdrup Jongkhar to Phuentsholing via the Indian territories of Assam and West bengal. The road descends fairly abruptly through thick jungle befor arriving at Samdrup Jongkhar. The town is no more than a frontier post with a couple of hotels and restaurants. Visitors can use Samdrup Jongkhar as an exit town, instead of driving all the way back to fly out from Paro or drive out from Phuntsholing. The Guwahati airport is located about 100 kms frm the boarder. There are daily Indian domestic flights to Calcutta and Delhi.

Phuentsholing
( alt 300 metres) :- Popularly known as the "Gate-Way to Bhutan", it is a vibrant town located on the Indian border town of Jalpaiguri, a district of the Indian state of West Bengal. The town is a bustling commercial centre providing a glimpse of Indian merchants in their particular attire and Bhutanese in "ghos" and "Kiras". A town that is a boiling couldron of two different cultures. The climate of Phuntsholing contrasts greatly with the higher lands. It is more tropical, hot and humid during the summer and, warm and pleasant in the winters. A 180 kms from Thimphu, driving would take about 6 hrs. Phuntsholing can be used as entry point or exit point from the country. The closest Indian domestic airport is the Bagdogra Airport. About 160 kms from the boarder. There are daily flights to and from Delhi and Calcutta. BTCL also offers extention tours to the neighbouring places of Jaldapara Wild Life Sanctuary, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Sikkim.
