Wangduephodrang
Wangduephodrang is the last western town on the central highway before central Bhutan.
A 45 minute drive from Punakha is Wangdue Phodrang or Wangdue, as it is more familarly known. Wangdue is a typical small Bhutanese town.A bustling market with well stocked shops and a pretty view over its own valley and dzong.
Situated south of the road and east of Wangduephodrang, Gangtey Gompa is an old monastery dating back to the 17th century. The Gompa itself is similar in style to the temples found all over Bhutan. Its situation, however, is remarkable. After a difficult drive south through the mountains, the road from the highway leads to a rare opening into a golden field of maize and yaks.
A few kilometres past the Gompa on the valley floor is the village of Phobjika. This is the winter home of the Black Necked Cranes. The cranes migrate from the high plains of the Tibetan plateau in winter to the milder climate of Phobjika. The short journey south from the main east-west artery is well worth the detour for the dramatic change of scenery.
